Surgical Technicians (Scrub Techs)

Position Overview:

The contractor shall provide four full-time Surgical Technicians (Scrub Techs) to support the Minneapolis VA Health Care System (MVAHCS). The Surgical Technicians will play a key role in delivering high-quality care to VA beneficiaries by ensuring that all surgical procedures are prepared for and conducted in a safe, sterile, and efficient manner.

Responsibilities:

• Assist in surgical operations by preparing and arranging necessary surgical instruments, equipment, and supplies.
• Maintain a sterile environment throughout surgical procedures, adhering to all infection control guidelines.
• Anticipate the needs of the surgical team and provide instruments and supplies during surgery.
• Prepare patients for surgery, ensuring their safety and comfort.
• Assist in gowning and gloving of surgical team members.
• Perform instrument counts before, during, and after surgery to ensure that no foreign objects remain in the surgical site.
• Maintain surgical equipment and instruments, ensuring they are clean, sterile, and in proper working condition.
• Assist in the preparation of the operating room for the next patient by ensuring the room is cleaned and sterilized according to protocols.
• Ensure compliance with VA and Minneapolis VA Health Care System standards, policies, and regulations.

Qualifications:

• Completion of a surgical technology program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) or equivalent.
• Current certification as a Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) preferred.
• Minimum of 3 years of experience working as a Surgical Technician.
• Strong understanding of sterile technique, infection control, and proper handling of surgical instruments.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to work effectively within a multidisciplinary surgical team.
• Ability to handle the physical demands of the role, including standing for long periods and lifting surgical equipment.

Work Environment:

• Services will be performed onsite at the Minneapolis VA Health Care System (MVAHCS), One Veterans Drive, Minneapolis, MN 55417.
• The Surgical Technicians will work in a fast-paced environment, assisting in a variety of surgical procedures for VA beneficiaries.

VA Hours of Operation/Scheduling:

• Operating Room Hours:
  The MVAHCS operating room hours are Monday through Friday, 6:30 a.m. – 7:30 p.m. Weekend hours are based on urgent and emergent cases.

• Contractor Shift Schedule:
  Contractor’s personnel will be scheduled for the following shifts, posted at least 3 weeks in advance:

  • 7:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.
  • 9:30 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.
  • 11:00 a.m. – 7:30 p.m.

  The daily tour of duty is 8.5 hours, including a 30-minute unpaid lunch break.

• Timeliness and Readiness:
  Contractor personnel must arrive on-site at the MVAHCS for their assigned shifts, in scrubs, and ready to work at the start of their shift. If assigned personnel are unavailable, the Contractor must notify the Contracting Officer's Representative (COR) prior to the start of the shift.

• Off-Hours Coverage:
  Contractor personnel must be available for on-call duty during off-hours when the clinic is closed, including evenings, weekends, and holidays. Call coverage hours include:

  • Weekday Call Coverage: Monday – Thursday, 7:00 p.m. – 6:30 a.m.
  • Weekend Call Coverage: Friday at 7:00 p.m. – Monday at 6:30 a.m.
  • Holiday Call Coverage: Hours vary based on the holiday.

  On-call personnel must respond within 15 minutes by phone and be on-site within 60 minutes if called back to staff the OR.
