Position Overview:
The VA Central Iowa Health Care System seeks a highly qualified Board-Certified/Board-Eligible Nephrologist to provide comprehensive on-site nephrology care to veterans. The position involves both outpatient and inpatient care, administrative responsibilities, and participation in quality improvement initiatives.
Key Responsibilities:
Outpatient Care:
- Conduct one four-hour clinic weekly (Thursday).
- Conduct two four-hour clinics monthly (Friday).
- Provide timely consults and follow-up care for nephrology patients.
Inpatient Care and On-Call Services:
- Perform inpatient consultations and manage patients requiring peritoneal or hemodialysis.
- Be available for on-call consultations outside clinic hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
- Respond to phone consultations within 15 minutes and see patients within 60 minutes when required.
Diagnostic and Therapeutic Duties:
- Initiate, monitor, and discontinue dialysis treatments as necessary.
- Manage postoperative follow-ups and provide comprehensive nephrology services in clinic and inpatient settings.
Administrative Responsibilities:
- Document all patient interactions and care in the VA electronic health record system (CPRS).
- Participate in quality improvement and staff meetings as required.
- Report patient safety incidents and participate in quality management reviews.
Qualifications:
- MD/DO degree from an accredited institution.
- Board-certified/eligible in Nephrology (American Board of Internal Medicine).
- Active, unrestricted medical license in any U.S. state, territory, or commonwealth.
- Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS).
- Minimum of five years’ experience in nephrology practice preferred.
Competencies:
- Expertise in managing dialysis, chronic kidney disease, and other nephrology-related conditions.
- Familiarity with electronic medical records (preferably VA CPRS).
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills to work within a multidisciplinary team.
Work Schedule:
- Clinics: Thursdays (8:00 AM – 12:00 PM) and two Fridays per month (8:00 AM – 12:00 PM).
- On-call availability outside clinic hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
