Location: Tinker Air Force Base (TAFB), Oklahoma
Type: Non-personal Services Contract
Contract Duration: 1 Base Year + 4 Option Years (Maximum 5 Years)
Hours: Minimum 20 hours/week, including weekends, evenings, and holidays as needed
Position Overview
The Religious Education Coordinator (Catholic or Protestant) will plan, develop, coordinate, and execute comprehensive faith-based Religious Education (RE) and spiritual formation programs for all age groups within their respective chapel community at Tinker AFB. The Coordinator will serve in close collaboration with assigned chaplains and contracted clergy to support military personnel, civilians, and their families.
Key Responsibilities
General Responsibilities
Provide weekly RE programming (e.g., Sunday School, Catechism, Confirmation, RCIA, Bible Study, etc.)
Develop and execute Sacramental preparation and special RE events (e.g., retreats, VBS)
Maintain regular office hours on the Chapel campus
Recruit, train, mentor, and manage RE volunteers
Lead ecumenical programming and collaborate with other Coordinators as required
Maintain clean, safe, and orderly RE facilities and classrooms
Develop and execute marketing strategies, including bulletin announcements and social media
Attend chapel staff meetings, advisory council meetings, and planning events
Coordinate with Chapel Audio-Visual Technician for relevant technology use
Ensure all programming is compliant with applicable Air Force Instructions (AFIs), chapel Operating Instructions (OIs), and denominational standards
Catholic-Specific Responsibilities
Must be a Catholic in good standing
Comply with Archdiocese for the Military Services (AMS) guidelines and obtain Catechist Certification within 6 months of hire
Plan and execute programs such as First Communion, Confirmation, and RCIA
Prepare and manage AMS-related reports and budgets
Coordinate AMS visitation preparation with contracted priest
Protestant-Specific Responsibilities
Plan and execute Protestant RE programs and sacramental preparation (e.g., Confirmation)
Collaborate with the Protestant Advisory Council for community support and program direction
Administrative Duties
Prepare and submit RE budgets and program planning documents (e.g., Chapel Program Coordination worksheets, Airman Ministry Plan input)
Track attendance, volunteer hours, and maintain rosters
Submit after-action reports or event evaluations
Ensure background checks for all volunteers per DoD and TAFB procedures
Submit facility requests and procurement needs for RE events and supplies
Submit monthly invoices through Wide Area Workflow
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s Degree in Education with at least 2 years of paid RE experience, OR
Bachelor’s Degree in any field with at least 4 years of paid RE experience
Strong background in theology, education, curriculum development, and volunteer management
Experience working in a pluralistic religious environment
Ability to organize and manage multiple program elements
Excellent oral and written communication skills
Capable of obtaining a favorable background check and meeting TAFB security requirements
Additional Requirements (Catholic Coordinator Only)
Must be a practicing Catholic in good standing
Obtain AMS Catechist Certification within 6 months; pursue Advanced Catechist Certification if no Master’s in Theology/Religious Studies
Must remain current with all AMS training and certification updates (at personal expense)
Work Schedule and Availability
Minimum 20 hours/week on-site; must be present before/during/after RE events
Available for weekend Masses/services, evening programs, holidays, and special chapel events
Flexible schedule with pre-approved deviations by the Wing Chaplain
Responsible for arranging qualified substitutes during absences
Security and Compliance
Must pass background checks including FBI fingerprinting and installation records check
Must comply with all federal, state, and local laws, AF computer security rules, and Air Force RE program regulations
Maintain appropriate contractor identification during all duties and correspondence
