Job Summary
We are seeking qualified and experienced American Sign Language (ASL) Interpreters to support deaf and hard-of-hearing personnel at Naval Air Station Whidbey Island (NASWI). This position provides non-personal services in compliance with ADA and DoD policies and includes both in-person and virtual remote interpreting (VRI) support. Interpreters will perform simultaneous and consecutive interpretation during professional, technical, and environmental meetings, training sessions, and day-to-day communications.
Key Responsibilities
Provide on-site and virtual ASL interpretation for deaf/hard-of-hearing government personnel
Interpret in meetings, site visits, HR discussions, team briefings, and training sessions
Use platforms like MS Teams and Zoom for VRI
Provide interpretation in American Sign Language (ASL), Pidgin Signed English (PSE), and other forms as needed
Ensure accurate, impartial, and confidential communication between deaf and hearing parties
Adjust interpreting methods to suit the communication style of the client
Use technical terminology specific to engineering, environmental compliance, and military operations
Maintain professionalism while working independently and without direct government supervision
Minimum Qualifications
RID National Interpreter Certification (NIC) or
Minimum of five (5) years of experience in professional ASL interpreting in technical or government settings
Proficiency in ASL, PSE, and transliteration methods
Ability to interpret technical language and military-related acronyms
Strong verbal and written communication in standard American English
Ability to work on-demand with short notice and during emergencies (weather, illness, etc.)
Knowledge of ADA, Rehabilitation Act of 1973, and relevant DoD regulations
Preferred Skills
Experience working with military or government agencies
Tactile or Deaf-Blind interpretation experience
Familiarity with Navy-specific terminology and workplace practices
Work Schedule
Services required on a weekly, biweekly, or monthly basis
Must be available for in-person meetings and remote sessions as assigned
