Position Overview:

The Catholic Worship Musician is responsible for providing musical accompaniment and leadership during Catholic worship services at MacDill AFB Chapel. This includes weekend Masses, rehearsals, Holy Day services, and special events such as Christmas Masses and Holy Week services. The Musician will collaborate with the Catholic Chaplain, cantor, musicians, and volunteers to foster a vibrant, inclusive, and spiritually enriching music program.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Music Services: Provide music and/or accompaniment for weekly services, including 2 weekend Masses and 1 rehearsal, as well as special services (e.g., Holy Days, Christmas, Triduum, Holy Week, memorials/funerals).

  • Rehearsal & Service Commitment: Attend and perform at all required services and rehearsals, working with the chapel's volunteer musicians.

  • Sound Check & Preparation: Arrive at least 30 minutes before each service for sound checks and to ensure readiness at least 15 minutes before the start of services.

  • Music Selection: Select and perform a variety of musical styles, including Christian hymns, contemporary songs, and liturgical music. Ensure diversity in the selection as per the needs of the congregation.

  • Program Development: Assist in the development and coordination of the Catholic Liturgical Music Program, working closely with the Chaplain and other staff to ensure smooth integration of music in worship.

  • Volunteer Coordination: Lead and organize volunteer musicians and singers for services.

  • Planning: Collaborate in planning the music for the Liturgical Year, including Holy Days, Christmas, and special celebrations.

Performance Metrics:

  • Ensure 100% attendance at weekend Masses and regular rehearsals.

  • Be able to work special rehearsals and services as authorized by the Catholic Chaplain or designate, with no more than 1 missed rehearsal or service per year.

  • Maintain punctuality, arriving no later than 30 minutes before services and completing sound checks 15 minutes before the start of each service, with no more than 1 late arrival per month.

Qualifications:

  • Education & Experience:

    • Associate's degree in Music or equivalent experience.

    • Proficient in guitar and piano, with the ability to lead and accompany services while singing and playing simultaneously.

    • Ability to sight-read hymns, contemporary, and praise music.

  • Skills & Abilities:

    • Ability to work with cantors, musicians, and choirs to create a cohesive music program.

    • Knowledge of Catholic liturgical music and the ability to follow directives from the American National Conference of Catholic Bishops.

    • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work in a diverse, multi-faith environment.

    • Ability to maintain professional standards of conduct and decorum.

Government-Furnished Resources:

  • Office space, sound system training, and necessary music equipment (as available) will be provided.

Work Environment:

  • The position requires a multi-faith, multi-cultural work environment. The Musician will be expected to adhere to safety and security protocols and ensure all government property is properly secured.

  • The position will involve regular interaction with parishioners, chaplain staff, and volunteers.
