Position Overview: The Aerospace Medicine Specialist Physician (Flight Surgeon) will support the Flight Medicine and Physical Standards Branch (SGPF) at the HQ AETC/SG Command Surgeon. This position involves providing expertise and consultation on the management, administration, and oversight of aeromedical programs for the Air Education and Training Command (AETC). The primary duties include performing medical evaluations, reviewing waivers, providing guidance on aerospace medicine policies, and conducting risk assessments. This position also requires participation in program evaluations, developing presentations, and maintaining accurate data in specialized government databases.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide expert consultation on the execution of the Aerospace Medicine Enterprise (AME) for AETC bases, including medical, occupational, and preventive medicine programs.
- Review and assess medical cases for the Force Development Exception to Policy (FDETP) board, including coordination with medical providers and higher headquarters.
- Ensure compliance with aerospace medicine programs via self-assessments, feedback, and quality control recommendations.
- Provide recommendations on Flying Class physical waivers and consult with various AETC personnel on physical and medical standards.
- Consult on the implementation of Arming Use of Force (AUoF) within the Personnel Reliability Assurance Program (PRAP).
- Collaborate with Public Health Emergency Officer (PHEO) programs to implement and support emergency medical planning and procedures.
- Develop and deliver slide presentations on aerospace medicine issues and certification standards.
- Input and maintain medical certification and waiver data in the government’s designated database.
- Advise and implement operational risk analysis for Force Development Exception to Policy (FDETP) board processes.
Qualifications:
Education:
- Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathy (DO) degree from an accredited institution.
Certifications:
- Board Certification in Aerospace Medicine.
- Valid, unrestricted medical license in good standing from any U.S. jurisdiction.
Experience:
- A minimum of 3 years of active duty U.S. Military Flight Surgeon experience in the last 10 years, including at least 5 years of experience in Air Force medical standards.
- Proven experience in conducting special operational evaluations, including Preventive Health Assessments for flyers/special duty personnel, and initial certification exams for flying/special duty applicants.
- Experience in aeromedical dispositions for flying/special operational duty and applying medical, fitness, and profiling standards in accordance with Air Force instructions (AFIs) and DoD guidelines.
- In-depth knowledge of Air Force medical policies and regulations, including AFI 48-101, DAFMAN 48-123, DAFMAN 48-149, AFI 36-2905, AFI 48-133, and DoD 6130.03.
Skills and Abilities:
- Strong communication skills to interact with medical personnel, military staff, and higher headquarters.
- Ability to analyze and assess complex medical situations and provide expert recommendations.
- Experience in writing regulatory guidance and policy, reviewing waivers, and overseeing the implementation of aerospace medicine standards.
- Capability to work independently and as part of a team to ensure the safety and readiness of aircrew and special duty personnel.
