Job Title: Intraoperative Neurophysiologic Monitoring (IONM) Technologist

Job Summary:

The IONM Technologist will provide on-site intraoperative neurophysiologic monitoring (IONM) services to support neurosurgical cases at the Hershel “Woody” Williams VA Medical Center. This role requires technical proficiency in neurophysiologic monitoring modalities and strict adherence to certification, continuing education, and facility medical staff policies. The technologist will work under the supervision of a Neurophysiologist or Neurologist and collaborate with surgical teams to ensure patient safety and effective monitoring during neurosurgical procedures.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide technical-only intraoperative neurophysiologic monitoring services in the operating room, including preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative monitoring.
  • Perform neurophysiologic monitoring modalities such as:
  • Somatosensory Evoked Potentials (SSEPs)
  • Transcranial Motor Evoked Potentials (TcMEPs)
  • Spontaneous and Triggered Electromyography (S-EMG, T-EMG)
  • Spinal cord mapping including D-Waves
  • Dermatomal Neuro Evoked Potentials (DNEPs)
  • Neuromonitoring of Motor Evoked Potentials (NMEPs)
  • Cortical motor monitoring
  • Respond to surgical case scheduling requests and ensure timely availability based on OR schedules.
  • Maintain open communication with neurosurgeons, surgical service OR managers, and other clinical staff regarding monitoring needs, changes, or updates.
  • Document all services provided and communicate any monitoring changes as directed by surgical or neurology staff.

Required Qualifications:

  • Certification: Accredited through the American Board of Registered Electro Neurophysiologic Technologist (ABRET) or equivalent recognized certification.
  • Ability to maintain valid and current certification, with all required continuing education credits and documentation submitted to the VA Contracting Officer Representative (COR) upon proposal submission and annually.
  • Fluency in English: ability to speak, understand, read, and write fluently.
  • Technical proficiency in neurophysiologic monitoring equipment and techniques.
  • Ability to provide documentation verifying education, certification, training, and any gaps in education as requested by CO/COR.
  • Adherence to the Medical Staff Bylaws, rules, and regulations of the facility governing medical staff behavior.
  • Ability to report and maintain Continuing Medical Education (CME)/Certified Education Unit (CEU) hours as required by certifying bodies and the facility credentialing office.
  • Maintain privileges through timely submission of CME documentation to avoid loss of privileges.

Work Schedule:

  • Services provided on an as-needed, case-by-case basis.
  • Routine cases scheduled by 1:00 p.m. ET the day prior to surgery or by 1:00 p.m. ET Friday for Monday surgeries.
  • Must be available to cover scheduled cases and provide coverage as agreed upon with the medical center.

Work Environment:

  • Services will be performed on-site at the Hershel “Woody” Williams VA Medical Center within the operating room setting.
  • The technologist will work closely with surgical teams, neurosurgeons, and facility staff to provide seamless intraoperative neuromonitoring support.

Reporting:

  • The technologist will report to the VA Contracting Officer Representative (COR) or designated supervisory personnel for compliance, documentation, and performance matters.
